Accepted Papers CVPR-97

A total of 544 papers were considered at the program committee meeting on March 1st and 2nd. Of these papers, 173 were accepted for publication, which is about a 32% acceptance rate. Of the accepted papers, 111 were selected as poster presentations and the remaining 62 were selected as oral presentations. There will be no distinction in the proceedings between the two presentation formats (each will receive 6 proceedings pages, with the option of buying one additional page). The program committee made decisions about oral versus poster presentation based on a number of criteria, including novelty, breadth of interest, appropriateness of the material to a poster or oral presentation, and overall quality.

16 members of the program committee, the program co-chairs and the general co-chairs attended the meeting, which lasted a day and a half. Prior to the meeting, each paper had received at least two reviews from members of the program committee (nearly all papers had three reviews). During the first half of the meeting, the attendees broke up into 6 subgroups of 3 people each. Each subgroup made initial recommendations for a set of approximately 90 papers, which had been previously assigned to subgroups based on topic area. During the second half of the meeting, the entire group considered each of the submitted papers, hearing the recommendation of the subgroup about each paper. There was aditional discussion and perhaps additional reviews if the subgroup had not reached agreement, or if the full group questioned the subgroup decision. Thus each paper was considered twice, once by a small group with more in-depth expertise and more time to evaluate each paper, and once by a larger group with a broader perspective. Conflicts of interest were handled by assigning papers with conflicts to different subgroups during the first half of the meeting, and by having people leave the room if there was discussion of such a paper during the full session.

Reviews will be sent to the paper authors by electronic mail. This is particularly important for accepted papers, because the author information will be sent to authors by email directly from IEEE.
